THE BRIEF

Recreate the Aston Martin F1 livery, normally applied in vinyl wrap, in velvet fabric instead.

The brand and design of the livery had to stay true throughout, with sponsor logos and their positioning carrying across exactly as they appear on the original.

THE PROCESS

Velvet fabric doesn't behave like the usual vinyl wrap. It has thickness and texture, so new installation techniques were developed to make sure the fabric conformed to the car's bodywork without affecting the finish.

Sponsor logos were a particular challenge. Keeping them clean, sharp and correctly positioned against thick, textured fabric took careful, panel-by-panel work.

The original team livery wrap was protected underneath before the velvet went on. Adhesive was then applied to both the wrap and the fabric. Repositioning was possible, but getting each panel right first time was essential when working with glue.

Usually, vinyl can be printed and cut to shape before it's applied. The velvet fabric's stretch and texture meant this wasn't possible here, so each panel and section of paintwork was masked with several layers of tape, and the fabric was cut to shape once it was already in position.

THE RESULT

One of the most striking and original show car wraps we have ever produced, creating a striking show piece at the Aston Martin Formula One team factory in Silverstone.
